Deputies Set Motorcyclist and Themselves on Fire After Tasing Him at Gaspump

baretto 1050x525

As TFTP reported last week, for the last several months, 26-year-old Jean Barreto has been fighting for his life in a Florida hospital after being set on fire by an Osceola County deputy. Barreto was pumping gas when a deputy deployed a taser, ignited the pump, causing it to explode, and cooked this man alive. Since that day, the Osceola County sheriff’s department has refused to cooperate with media and attorney inquiries in regard to releasing body camera footage but over the weekend, all that changed and the footage was quietly released. Now, the officer who started the fire, Deputy...

COI #193: Some Accountability – But Mostly Impunity – For US Law Enforcement

coi193a

On COI #193 Kyle Anzalone discusses several examples of American police abusing, even killing, citizens and covering up the crimes. Police rarely face criminal charges – or any consequences – for misconduct on the clock. However, with growing scrutiny of the broken criminal justice system, some officers have faced accountability.  Kyle breaks down the acquittal of Andrew Coffee IV and how it compares with the Kyle Rittenhouse trial. While other men were acquitted on the grounds of self-defense, the cases are very different. Coffee was charged for murdering his girlfriend, who was actually...

After 6 Months Paid Leave, Cop Finally Charged After Entering Father’s Backyard, Executing Him

johnson joe 1050x525

As frequent readers of the Free Thought Project understand, police officers mistake innocent individuals for criminals all the time. Often times, their fear gets the best of them and these folks who have committed no crime and harmed no one, are beaten or arrested only to be exonerated down the road. One man in Idaho Falls, however, will not have a chance to be exonerated because the police who mistook him for a suspect—executed him. On February 8, 2021, Elias Aurelio Cerdas, a 26-year-old officer who graduated from training less than a year before the shooting, entered the backyard of...

Another Failed 20-Year War: America vs. Somalia

Enough Already Book Cover

This essay is adapted from the Libertarian Institute's Executive Director Scott Horton's new book, Enough Already: Time to End the War on Terrorism. Freedom Works The name "Somalia" has somehow become a slur against Americans who prioritize political liberty. "Oh, you think freedom works, huh? Well, why don’t you just move to Somalia?" This nonsense may have originated from the fact that some libertarian economists, such as Michael van Notten and Peter T. Leeson, noticed that when Somalia’s government ceased to exist after various warlords had exhausted themselves fighting over control of...

For a New Recovery: A Synopsis on the Reality of Drug Legalization and Recovery Through the Eyes of a Libertarian

Introduction Marijuana. Xanax. LSD. 2CE/2CI. Methamphetamine. A literal galaxy of wines, liquors, and beers. MDMA. OxyContin. Cocaine. Psilocybin mushrooms. Adderall. Heroin. Crack. Klonopin. Trazodone. etc, etc, ad infinitum... To most everyone, that list represents a smorgasbord of substances that elicit a change in mood or behavior. Maybe they’re looked upon with a revered hesitancy, not quite full blown skepticism...but not really held to any serious consideration. Perhaps a twinge of uneasiness  washes over you based upon a past experience, either personally or vicariously through a...

Does Oregon’s Decriminalization Signal An End to the War on Drugs?

Oregon became the first state to decriminalize possession of otherwise illegal drugs. According to this Feb. 1 Associated Press article, “Police in Oregon can no longer arrest someone for possession of small amounts of heroin, methamphetamine, LSD, oxycodone and other drugs as a ballot measure that decriminalized them took effect on Monday.” Instead of being arrested, those found in possession “would face a $100 fine or a health assessment that could lead to addiction counseling.” That such a measure was approved by Oregon voters is an encouraging sign that more people are waking up to...

As The Free Thought Project has previously reported, the Virginia-based Treatment Advocacy Center, an organization dedicated to eliminating the barriers faced by those with severe mental illnesses, released a jaw-dropping report in regard to police interactions with the mentally ill. In their report titled, Overlooked in the Undercounted: The Role of Mental Illness in Fatal Law Enforcement Encounters, researchers discovered that people with an untreated mental illness are16 times more likely to be killed during an interaction with police than anyone else. According to the study, by all...

Abolishing the Police in the Anarchist Tradition

Benjamintucker

The tragic murder of George Floyd at the hands of the Minneapolis Police Department has provoked a national conversation about police—their role in society, their protection from accountability, the unique danger they pose to civil society. That conversation has begun to pose a radical question, one that, if it seems novel, has been explored by libertarians and anarchists for generations: could we get along entirely without...
