The US is considering “dramatically” increasing its training of Ukrainian forces, CNN reported on Wednesday, citing unnamed US officials.

The plan under consideration would aim to train up to 2,500 Ukrainian troops each month at a US base in Germany. The report said that since Russia invaded, the US has only trained a few thousand Ukrainians to use specific weapons systems.

The new training program would be more sophisticated and would include infantry maneuvers and the use of artillery systems. Ukrainians have been receiving similar training in Poland and Britain. The British started an infantry program over the summer with the goal of training 10,000 Ukrainian troops.

The new training program was requested by Ukraine and is still under review by the Biden administration. If approved, the training would likely take place at a US base in Grafenwoehr, Germany.

The potential training program is another sign that the US plans to provide long-term support for Kyiv. The US is set to open a command in Germany dedicated entirely to overseeing the arming and training of Ukraine’s forces that will be headed by a three-star general.
