Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was injured during the 12-day Israeli war on Iran last month.

According to Iranian state media, “Pezeshkian’s leg was injured by an Israeli attack on June 16. The session was taking place in the lower levels of a secure government facility in Western Tehran when the aggression began.”

The Fars report adds, “The assault was modeled after an Israeli plan to assassinate Hezbollah leader Seyed Hassan Nasrallah, involving the launch of six bombs or missiles aimed at entry and exit points to block evacuation routes and disrupt ventilation.”

Nasrallah, the longtime leader of the Lebanese group, was killed in September during a massive Israeli bombing operation in Beirut.

Israel started its aggressive war on Iran on June 13. The opening attack targeted a number of high-ranking leaders and nuclear scientists. Tehran says more than 1,000 people were killed and at least 5,000 injured by Israel during the war.

Tel Aviv claimed it launched the attack to prevent Tehran from building nuclear weapons. However, the international nuclear watchdog and US intelligence community have repeatedly assessed that Iran is not attempting to weaponize its civilian nuclear program.

The Israeli war appeared to be aimed at toppling the Iranian government, with several top military officials assassinated. Additionally, Israeli intelligence made calls to other high-ranking Iranian officials demanding that they make videos announcing their rejection of their government, or Israel would kill their families.

The conflict ended shortly after the US dropped its largest non-nuclear bombs on three Iranian nuclear facilities, and Tehran responded by launching a largely symbolic missile salvo at an American airbase in Qatar.

Pezeshkian was elected in June 2024 after the previous Iranian president, Ebrahim Raisi, was killed in a helicopter crash.
