President Donald Trump met with President Volodymyr Zelensky and several European leaders in the White House on Monday to discuss ending the war in Ukraine.

“During the meeting we discussed Security Guarantees for Ukraine, which Guarantees would be provided by the various European Countries, with a coordination with the United States of America,” he wrote on Truth Social. “Everyone is very happy about the possibility of PEACE for Russia/Ukraine.”

Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday. The leaders discussed proposals to end the war in Ukraine. Trump said he was optimistic about the chances for peace, but said Ukraine must agree to any deal.

Zelensky has refused to cede any territory to Russia as part of a peace deal. Putin is demanding that Kiev recognize Russian control over about 20% of Ukraine.

Trump said the next step is for Putin and Zelensky to hold a bilateral summit, then Trump will mediate a round of talks between the Russian and Ukrainian leaders.

“I called President Putin, and began the arrangements for a meeting, at a location to be determined, between President Putin and President Zelenskyy.” He added, “After that meeting takes place, we will have a Trilat, which would be the two Presidents, plus myself.”

Trump has met stiff resistance from Kiev and European leaders in his effort to bring an end to the war.
