Hungary lashed out at Poland over Warsaw’s support of Ukrainian attacks on Russian pipelines. Budapest has repeatedly condemned Kiev for drone strikes that disrupt the flow of gas to Hungary.

Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski told Hungary’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto on X that he hopes Ukraine destroys the Druzhba oil pipeline, which carries Russian crude to Hungary through Ukraine.

“I hope your brave compatriot, Major Magyar, finally succeeds in knocking out the oil pipeline that feeds Putin’s war machine and you get your oil via Croatia,” Sikorski wrote.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán responded to the Polish foreign minister’s remarks, calling them “complete madness.” He added, “War psychosis has captured the mind of the Polish government. They want to throw away the thousand-year-old Hungarian-Polish friendship.”

Ukraine has launched multiple attacks on the Druzhba pipelines, resulting in some supply disruptions. Budapest has condemned Kiev for attacking the pipeline. Orbán said disabling the pipeline would cause financial hardship for Hungarians.

Orbán has been one of the only NATO leaders to oppose escalating the proxy war in Ukraine. On Wednesday, the Hungarian leader addressed a peace march in Budapest. “The day of the Budapest Peace March has come. Today, we send a message to the whole world: Hungary says NO to war! We will not die for Ukraine. We will not send our children to the slaughterhouse at Brussels’ command,” he wrote on X.

Last week, President Donald Trump said he planned to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest. However, White House officials later said the summit was canceled.

Szijjarto said Hungary was still trying to revive the meeting. “Bad news for the pro-war lobby and good news for those who want peace,” he wrote on Wednesday. “After my meeting with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, it’s clear that the US has not given up on holding the Budapest Peace Summit. Preparations are ongoing and the only question is timing, not intention.”

The Hungarian Foreign Minister blamed “the pro-war political elite” for attempting to scuttle the summit and prolong the war in Ukraine. “From the moment the Peace Summit in Budapest was announced, it was obvious that many would do everything possible to stop it from happening,” he wrote.

“The pro-war political elite and their media always behave this way before events that could prove decisive between war and peace.” Szijjarto added, “It will be no different this time. Until the Summit actually takes place, expect a wave of leaks, fake news, and statements claiming that it won’t happen.”
