An Israeli official said there has been a “crazy” amount of coordination between Washington and Tel Aviv in recent weeks. 

“The number of Israeli officers visiting the United States and American officers visiting Israel is crazy. The level of coordination is the highest ever,” an Israeli official told Ynet. The outset described the coordination as “nearly unprecedented.”

The discussion comes as President Donald Trump is threatening to attack Iran, and the US is engaging in a massive military buildup in the Middle East. The President has told Tehran that if it does not agree to a new deal, he will order an attack. 

Washington is demanding that the Islamic Republic agree to limits on its nuclear program, the elimination of its uranium enrichment capabilities, restrictions on the range of its ballistic missiles, and Tehran’s cutting ties with other groups in the Middle East. 

Earlier this week, US and Iranian officials agreed to meet in Oman on Friday. However, Tehran said on Wednesday that it wanted to limit the talks to the nuclear issue, and Washington canceled the negotiations. 

On Thursday, it was announced that the talks were back on and that Iran and the US had reached a compromise. The talks will “focus” on the nuclear issue, but the missile program and Iran’s regional allies will be discussed. 

Israeli officials do not believe talks will move forward or result in an agreement. “I think the room for flexibility exists only on the nuclear issue,” Dr. Raz Zimmt, head of the Iran and Shiite Axis Program at the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS), told The Jerusalem Post. “Giving up the nuclear issue isn’t really a concession, because they don’t truly have a nuclear program; they have an air force that can’t take off – so how would they create deterrence?”

Behind the scenes, Americans were pushing Israel not to launch a preemptive attack on Iran, as it did in June.
