Ukraine is using a drone developed by an American company to identify targets inside Russia.
Ukrainian forces say the V-BAT drone developed by ShieldAI is the most effective for collecting intelligence far from the front lines. “One of its biggest advantages is its range,” the drone operator said. “Because the V-BAT can observe from long range, we’re able to confirm what’s there, collect detailed imagery, and provide intelligence without getting too close to the target.”
They added, “We use a few other systems, but none of them offer the same range as the V-BAT. They can’t compete with it in terms of endurance or communications.”
The V-BAT communicates with a Starlink terminal. SpaceX has complained about the US using Starlink nodes on military drones, arguing the Department of War should use the more expensive Starshield system.
Ukrainian operators say the intelligence collected by the V-BAT has allowed for more attacks deep inside Russian territory. In June, Ukraine doubled the number of attacks it carried out at least 30 miles from the front lines.
The attacks scouted by V-BAT drones have focused on the Black Sea region. One Ukrainian official said Kiev plans to turn the Crimean Peninsula into an island. Lockheed Martin pledged to expedite the production of the launcher.
