US News

  • Tulsi Gabbard is suing Google for blocking her campaign’s ads following the first debate. Google claims that the Gabbard campaign trigger safeguards after they significantly increased ad spending. [Link]
  • California has tripled the rate of raids against unlicensed marijuana shops in 2019. [Link]
  • An Ohio nuclear energy company was able to use $30 million in donations to pass a $1.1 billion energy bailout law. [Link] 
  • Attorney General Barr reinstates the federal death penalty and schedules five executions. [Link]
  • The police officer who killed Eric Garner got a raise. The treatment of the police officer shows Mayor Bill DeBlasio’s poor judgment. [Link]

North Korea

  • North Korea tested two short-range ballistic missiles. The US called for North Korea to stop provocative acts and for talks with North Korea to continue. [Link]
  • Secretary of State Pompeo says he expects working-level negotiations between the US and North Korea to start within weeks. Pompeo also said he hopes Chairman Kim will uphold his promise to denuclearize. [Link]

Afghanistan

  • The Taliban say the group will not engage in direct talks with the Afghan government until an announcement is made about an agreement for the withdrawal of foreign forces. [Link]
  • A candidate to be the Afghan vice president was injured in a bombing. Two civilians were killed in the attack. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. [Link]
  • The Islamic State used bombings to killed 11 people in Kabul. [Link]

Africa

  • The US claims to kill a IS coordinator in Somalia with an airstrike. [Link]
  • An airstrike killed five doctors on a medical facility in Tripoli. Field Marshal Haftar’s forces are accused of carrying out the strike. [Link]
  • Fifty-five bodies have been recovered from a migrant ship that sunk off the coast of Libya. One hundred fifty people are feared to have drowned. [Link]
  • A Shi’ite group in Nigeria – the Islamic Movement of Nigeria – has been protesting for the past week. At least 20 members of the group have been killed during the protests. The government has now banned the group. [Link]
