The Department of Defense Inspector General reviewed hundreds of weapon shipments to Ukraine, finding that half lacked proper documentation.
The report released by the Pentagon IG on October 18th examined hundreds of arms transfers to Ukraine that occurred in the first months after the Russian invasion in 2022. The arms transfers totaled $2.1 billion. The investigation found that over 50%, $1.1 billion, of weapons shipments to Kiev, lacked the required paperwork.
The study is not the first review of arms transfers to Ukraine to find that the Pentagon’s documentation falls short of the requirements. The IG has claimed that a lack of training and a rush to get weapons to Ukraine are the cause the lack of proper documentation.
“This quick reaction led to a breakdown in internal controls,” the report concluded.
Over the past two and a half years, Washington has lavished Kiev with around $60 billion in military aid. It is unclear if the Pentagon has improved its documentation of the weapons transfers.
