Tel Aviv is calling tens of thousands of reservists into active duty as the Israel Defense Forces fights a myriad of wars in Syria, Lebanon, and the occupied Palestinian territories. Many Israeli reservists have already served multiple deployments and are threatening to ignore orders to redeploy.

According to Haaretz, Tel Aviv is preparing tens of thousands of orders calling reserve soldiers to active duty. The IDF plans to expand military operations in Gaza and needs more soldiers.

The reservists are expected to deploy to Lebanon, Syria, the West Bank, and Gaza. The additional soldiers will free up more Israeli troops to engage in military operations in the Strip.

Meanwhile, the military leadership is drawing up plans to remove Palestinians from the town of Muwasi along the Gaza coast. Israeli troops have forced hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to live in the area, which has become a tent city. Now, Tel Aviv is claiming Muwasi has become a safe haven for Hamas, and must be cleared of all Palestinians.

While Israel claims its goal is to free its hostages held by Hamas, clearing Muwasi, which Tel Aviv had deemed a safe zone, is further evidence that Israel’s goal is to cleanse the Strip of all Palestinians.

It’s unclear how many of the Israeli reservists will return to active duty. In March, Haaretz reported speaking with Israeli military officers who were informed by reservists they would not return if called up. Most said they were opposed to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s judicial reforms and his effort to oust Shin Bet chief Rosen Bar.

Some of those unwilling to return to active duty include officers and commanders in important posts. A total of 12,000 reservists have signed letters saying they will not return to combat, with some estimates assessing that up to 50% of Israel’s reserve soldiers will not report when called up.
