Just under half of Americans said they support US law enforcement arresting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Netanyahu is wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes committed in Gaza.

A poll conducted by The Economist and YouGov released on Tuesday shows that a plurality of Americans want Netanyahu arrested. When asked, “The International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for Benjamin Netanyahu. Should the U.S. arrest Netanyahu if he comes here?” 49% of Americans responded “yes,” more than double the number who said “no.”

Over two-thirds of Democratic voters and 55% of independents want US law enforcement to arrest Netanyahu. Even among Republicans, only 49% said they did not want Netanyahu arrested in the US, while 20% want the Israeli leader apprehended and 31% responded they were “not sure.”

The ICC has issued arrest warrants for several Israeli and Palestinian leaders for crimes committed on October 7, 2023, and the destruction of Gaza. Israel has killed all three Palestinian leaders wanted by the ICC.

Over four in ten Americans told pollsters that they believe Israel is conducting a genocide in Gaza, compared with just 24% of Americans who do not believe Israel is engaged in ethnic cleansing.

However, about a fifth of Americans approve of Israel conducting a genocide in Gaza. When asked, “Would you support or oppose removing all Palestinians from Gaza?” 19% of Americans said they somewhat or strongly support the action.
