North Korea’s Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un said he will continue to support Russia as it wages war against Ukraine. Additionally, North Korean state media published an article condemning US support for Taiwan.
“It is the steadfast policy of the DPRK government and my unshakable option to attach importance to the comprehensive strategic partnership and alliance forged with the fraternal Russian Federation and to steadily expand and develop the joint work,” Kim said in a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin and published in North Korean state media on Wednesday.
The letter continued, “I reaffirm my invariable support for you and the Russian Federation, being firmly convinced that the Russian people’s sacred war of justice for defending the sovereignty, security interests and territorial integrity of the country will surely end with their victory.”
Pyongyang and Moscow have formed a close relationship in recent years, including signing a mutual defense pact. North Korea has also provided Russia with troops, artillery ammunition and ballistic missiles for the war.
The alliance grew after diplomacy between Kim and President Donald Trump failed to produce an agreement and Russia invaded Ukraine. Kiev has received a substantial amount of support from the US and other members of NATO.
North Korea also took a position favorable to China by condemning US support for Taiwan. Kim Myong Chol, an international affairs analyst of the DPRK, wrote in state media, “‘Peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait’ is something always repeated by the United States and its allies in the international arena.”
“However, the US has systematically destroyed regional stability and persistently escalated the situation under the pretext of “opposing unilateral attempt at change of phenomenon” in the Taiwan Strait.” He added, “The emergence of fighter jets sold by the US on the island of Taiwan a few days ago is another typical example of the U.S. ‘peculiar contribution’ to ‘peace and stability’ of the Taiwan Strait.”
China views Taiwan as a breakaway region, and Washington’s support for Taipei creates tensions with Beijing.
