A second man was arrested for his alleged role in the Nord Stream pipeline bombing that occurred in September 2022. Investigative journalist Seymore Hersh reported that the sabotage attack was conducted by the Biden administration using US divers.
On Tuesday, the man identified as “Volodymyr Z” was arrested in Poland, according to his lawyer Tymoteusz Paprocki. Paprocki plans to challenge the extradition from Poland to Germany.
The Nord Stream pipelines carried natural gas from Russia to Germany. The pipelines were jointly owned by the Russian state oil firm and German energy companies. In September of 2022, three of the four pipelines were destroyed by bombs. No country or group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
Volodymyr Z is accused of being one of the divers who planted explosives on the underwater pipelines. He is the second Ukrainian man arrested in connection with the attack. “Serhii K” was detained by Italian authorities in August.
Serhii K is continuing to fight his extradition from Italy to Germany.
Multiple sources have offered different theories for who destroyed the Nord Stream pipelines. Western governments and media initially blamed Russia for destroying the pipeline. However, that explanation lacked a motive as the Russian state oil firm Gazprom was the majority owner of the pipelines.
Then, the Western government dropped the accusations against Moscow and claimed a group of Ukrainians carried out the attack. Russian officials have rejected the results of the investigations led by Germany, Denmark, and Sweden.
Investigative journalist Seymour Hersh reported speaking with sources who alleged that President Joe Biden directed the bombing. Hersh pointed to threats from President Biden and former State Department official Victoria Nuland that the US would take action against Nord Stream if Russia invaded Ukraine as Washington’s motive to carry out the attack.
