Republican Lawmakers Demand ‘A Consistent Forward Projection’ to Contain Russia and China

In a letter, several Republican members of the House demanded the Pentagon retain an Eastern European policy involving a powerful force projection. The letter comes as the Donald Trump administration is engaging in talks with Moscow and considering making significant cuts to the defense budget.

The letter, reported by Roll Call, states there must be “a consistent forward projection of US deterrence” to “increase regional security and bolster our allies and partners.” It continues, “With the rise of global tensions in recent years and the ongoing war in Ukraine, it’s essential that the US can properly and effectively project power within Eastern Europe”

President Trump has routinely criticized Europe for not contributing enough to the collective security of the continent and relying too much on the American military. He has also complained that Washington has provided more aid to Ukraine than the bloc of European countries collectively.

The letter was led by Rep. Pat Fallon, the chairman of the House Armed Services Military Personnel Subcommittee, and was signed by several hawkish members of the GOP caucus: Michael R. Turner (OH), Dan Crenshaw (TX), Jen Kiggans (VA), and Claudia Tenney (NY).

The lawmakers claim that an aggressive posture is needed because of the threats presented by Russia and China. “Neither Russia nor China will stop until they have replaced the United States as the number one global hegemon, and a strong forward posture in Eastern Europe will allow us to deter our adversaries early and decisively,” the letter says.

The demand to increase the US military presence in Europe contrasts with the vision Trump has promoted. At the end of Trump’s first term, he attempted to remove tens of thousands of American troops from Europe. Additionally, Trump has floated the idea of entering into a pact with Russia and China that would be a trilateral agreement to significantly reduce military spending.

Overall, Trump seems committed to reducing the tensions in Europe. The President dispatched Secretary of State Marco Rubio to lead a delegation in talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Saudi Arabia. The two sides agreed to normalize diplomatic ties and work towards ending the war in Ukraine.
