A resolution proposed by Democratic Senator Tammy Duckworth, instructing President Donald Trump to end the war against Iran, was rejected by the Senate.
On Wednesday, the upper chamber rejected the legislation on a 52-47 vote. Senator Rand Paul was the only Republican to vote for the resolution, and John Fetterman was the only Democrat to vote against the legislation. Republican Jim Justice did not vote.
Some Republicans indicated they could change their vote if the war continues beyond two months. “I will not support ongoing military action beyond a 60-day window without congressional approval. I take this position for two reasons — one is historical, and one is constitutional,” Republican Senator John Curtis said.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said that Democrats plan to bring legislation directing Trump to end the war every week. Congress has already considered four resolutions on the Iran War, and with the exceptions of Thomas Massie and Paul, Republicans used their majority to kill the legislation. The votes will likely be used by the Democrats during the midterm elections.
The war is already unpopular with Americans. Numerous polls have shown that a majority of Americans disapprove of the conflict.
While there is currently an uneasy truce between the US, Israel, and Iran, Washington and Tehran appear far apart on a permanent peace agreement. Additionally, President Trump has surged another 10,000 troops to the Middle East during the ceasefire.
