Russia fired one of its largest salvos against Ukraine in the war overnight on Monday.

“In this single strike alone, there were 32 ballistic missiles, 11 missiles of other types that approached their targets along a ballistic trajectory, 28 cruise missiles, and 450 attack drones—most of them ‘Shaheds,’” Ukrainian President Zelensky wrote on X Tuesday. “A significant number were intercepted, but not all.”

He added that the strikes hit energy infrastructure in several regions, leading to the loss of heat for some Ukrainians. Temperatures in Ukraine have frequently been below zero.

Moscow claimed the strikes were in response to Ukrainian attacks on Russian infrastructure. “In response to Ukraine’s terrorist attacks on civilian facilities on Russian territory, the Russian Armed Forces delivered a massive strike by ground-based and airborne long-range precision weapons and attack unmanned aerial vehicles on Ukrainian military-industrial enterprises and their energy facilities and sites for the storage and assembly of long-range unmanned aerial vehicles,” the Russian Defense Ministry said. “The goals of the strike were achieved. All the designated targets were hit.”

Russia also claimed to intercept 99 drones fired by Ukraine. Moscow also said that a Ukrainian missile destroyed an infrastructure facility in Belgorod.

The war in Ukraine has continued to escalate despite President Donald Trump’s effort to broker a peace agreement. Ukrainian and Russian officials are expected to meet in the UAE on Wednesday for talks mediated by the US.
