Russian officials confirmed that talks with Ukraine will resume on Wednesday.
Last month, the US began mediating talks between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations in the UAE. “We can confirm that this second round [of talks on security] will take place in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday and Thursday,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday.
The two sides held multiple meetings and agreed to a truce on attacking energy infrastructure. The talks were set to resume earlier this week, but were delayed following bilateral discussions between the US and Russia.
The energy truce is set to expire once talks resume.
President Donald Trump has been pressing for Kiev and Moscow to reach a deal to end the War in Ukraine. He has attempted to ramp up pressure on the Kremlin to make a deal by ramping up the economic war and aiding Ukrainian long-range strikes inside Russia.
He said some progress had been made, but the talks were “very complex.” “On some issues, we have certainly come closer because there have been discussions, conversations, and on some issues it is easier to find common ground,” he told reporters. “There are issues where it’s more difficult to find common ground.”
On Monday, Trump announced he was dropping tariffs on India from 25% to 17% because New Delhi agreed to stop buying Russian oil.
However, Moscow views Ukraine as a core national security concern, and the Kremlin says it will not end the invasion until Kiev agrees to neutrality, regime change, and other conditions that ensure Russia’s defense.
