President Donald Trump blasted the UK and Spain for not assisting the US and Israel’s war against Iran. Trump said he ordered the Treasury to cut all dealings with Madrid.
“Some of the European nations have been helpful, and some haven’t, and I’m very surprised,” Trump said during a press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on Tuesday. “Spain has been terrible. In fact, I told [Treasury Secretary] Scott [Bessent] to cut off all dealings with Spain.”
He added, “We’re going to cut off all trade with Spain. We don’t want anything to do with Spain.” The President said Madrid angered him by refusing to increase military spending and prohibiting the US from using its bases for operations against Iran. Although Trump claimed the US would use the bases without permission.
“We can use their base if they want. We can just fly in and use it. Nobody’s going tell us not to use it,” the President added.
Trump also attacked UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. “Spain has been very, very uncooperative, and so has the UK. Now the second one is shocking, but this is not the age of Churchill,” he said, adding that Starmer ”is not Winston Churchill.
Trump took issue with London’s plan to transfer the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. The UK colonized the island and expelled the native people. Mauritius control over the Chagos Islands puts the future of the US military base Diego Garcia in question.
