The US announced that American mediators will join talks between Russian and Ukrainian negotiators in the UAE. Additionally, the US will take part in talks hosted by the European Commission on security commitments for Ukraine.
On Monday, an official told Reuters the talks would take place in Abu Dhabi on November 10 and 11. The senior US official explained the talks would cover “post-war security agreements, de-escalation, humanitarian measures, and ending the war.” President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and envoy Steve Witkoff are expected to represent the American side.
Last month, the Kremlin said Russian President Vladimir Putin was prepared to resume negotiations aimed at ending the war that began in 2022.
“Our president informed Steve Witkoff that we are ready in principle to resume the above-mentioned trilateral talks around November 10 on the main subject,” Putin’s aide, Yury Ushakov, said in October. “This topic is about building a security system for Russia and Ukraine.”
In addition to the talks in the UAE next week, the European Union announced a meeting to discuss security commitments and post-war economic assistance for Ukraine. “So tomorrow the European Commission will host a meeting with representatives from Ukraine, from the United States, France, Germany, the UK, NATO and the World Bank and this meeting will build on earlier talks that took place in Miami,” Commission spokeswoman Paula Pinho told reporters on Tuesday.
She added that representatives from France, Germany, Britain and the United States would “discuss the way forward on bringing about a just and sustainable end to the war in Ukraine.”
Trump pledged to end the war in Ukraine on his first day in the White House, but has been frustrated with his inability to get Kiev and Moscow to compromise. He has recently lashed out at Zelensky for continuing to attack Russian energy infrastructure.
