White House Spent $40 Million In First Month Housing Prisoners at Gitmo

President Donald Trump is spending $40 million per month to house about 300 migrants at facilities in US-occupied Cuba. Some of the detainees are being held at an infamous George W. Bush-era torture prison.

According to the New York Times, the Department of Defense spent $39.3 million in the project’s first month, housing around 300 migrants at its facilities at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Additionally, the Defense and Homeland Security Departments report that about 1,000 employees are needed to hold the immigrants sent from the US to Cuba.

Five Senators toured the facilities last week, with Senator Jack Reed (D-RI) arguing that sending the migrants to Gitmo was a waste of resources.

While some of the men are being held at an immigration facility in US-occupied Cuba, over 100 are detained at the military base, which includes the torture prison used to hold accused terrorists. Most of the migrants held at the US facilities in Cuba are Venezuelans.

Trump has indicated that the detentions could be indefinite. “This will double our capacity immediately, right? And tough. That’s a tough – that’s a tough place to get out of,” the president explained when announcing the policy.

In implementing his immigration policy, President Trump has taken a number of steps that are potentially illegal.

During the Bush administration, Americans were regularly told not to worry about the unconstitutional torture taking place at the Gitmo prison, as the detainees were said to be the “worst of the worst.” However, the claim was debunked, as an overwhelming number of detainees at Gitmo were later found innocent.

Department of Homeland Security chief Kristi Noem has used the same rhetoric when explaining the current US policy. “There might be some resources that could be established for the worst of the worst at Guantanamo Bay, and that’s something that [Trump] is evaluating along with our team at the Department of Homeland Security,” she said.

While members of the Trump administration have portrayed those sent to Gitmo as violent criminals, reviews of many detainees have turned up only minor offenses, such as illegally entering the US.

Additionally, Trump has targeted permanent US residents and visa holders, having their standing in the US revoked for expressing support for Palestine. Those detained under the draconian policy have been arrested by ununiformed federal agents wearing masks.
