The Yemeni military revealed on Thursday that the chief of staff of the Ansarallah-led Yemeni Armed Forces (YAF), Major General Mohammed Abdul Kareem al-Ghamari, was killed by an Israeli strike. The statement said his 13-year-old son was also killed.

The official statement said Ghamari was killed “while performing his jihadist duties,” and joined “a large number of noble martyrs, civilian and military,” who were killed during the conflict with Israel. The statement did not say when he was killed.

Ansar Allah, the group that controls most of the populated areas of Yemen, launched a blockade of Israeli-linked shipping in 2023 in response to the genocide in Gaza. Ansar Allah has removed the blockade during ceasefire periods in Gaza.

Israel and the US have conducted large-scale bombing campaigns in Yemen over the past two years, but were unable to break the blockade. Additionally, Ansar Allah has attacked US ships in the Red Sea and targeted Israel with missiles and drones.

After weeks of the US bombing Yemen, in May, President Donald Trump reached a ceasefire with Ansar Allah that did not extend to Israel.

Israel and the US struck several civilian targets in Yemen, including ports, power plants, residential buildings, and media offices.
