Zelensky Says Democrats’ Victory Could Lead to More Support for Ukraine

zelensky highlights democratic support for ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed optimism that the sweeping victory by the Democratic Party in the midterm elections will lead the US to provide more support for Ukraine.

“I am also grateful to the Republicans, but the Democrats speak very clearly about supporting Ukraine and providing assistance to Ukraine,” Zelensky said on Wednesday.  “They speak about renewing the connection between the United States and Europe… Therefore, there is hope that a balance of power will emerge, and that we will receive more support.”

Under President Joe Biden, Washington sent Ukraine over $100 billion in weapons and financial assistance. President Donald Trump has continued to sell weapons and provide military assistance to Ukraine, but Zelensky has been frustrated by the level of support.

Zelensky is currently requesting the US begin sending Ukraine 100 Patriot missiles a month. While the State Department recently approved the potential sale of 500 Patriot missiles to Ukraine, Zelensky said the deliveries could take years. He argues that Ukraine urgently needs advanced interceptors.

Additionally, Biden said the US would continue to support Ukraine until Kiev is able to end the conflict on its terms, while Trump pressured Zelensky to make concessions to secure a peace deal.

However, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz argued that the opposition party capturing Congress is unlikely to impact Trump’s foreign policy. “Quite frankly, over the last two years, Trump has largely governed by bypassing Congress. Why should that be any different now?” he said.
