Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described President Donald Trump’s recent decisions concerning Russia and Ukraine as “painful.”
Piers Morgan asked Zelensky whether he felt “betrayed” by Trump after he agreed to a diesel deal with President Vladimir Putin and announced an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. Zelensky agreed, saying, “Really, yes … but it’s a little bit more complicated than just my emotions or my feelings.”
He added, “It’s painful when President Trump chooses one side, not our side.”
Twice in the past month, Trump has announced an energy truce between Russia and Ukraine on Truth Social. “Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!” the President wrote on Truth Social Sunday.
However, neither Ukraine nor Russia has implemented the announced truce, and Ukrainian officials have disputed that an agreement was reached. A senior Ukrainian official close to Zelensky told The Financial Times on Sunday moments after Trump posted his statement, “Nobody has heard [of the ceasefire].”
The interview came after Trump announced a diesel deal with Putin. The agreement marks a shift in US policy toward Russian energy exports. Washington banned imports of Russian petroleum products in 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The Treasury Department has issued a temporary license allowing Russian diesel to enter the global market.
Axios reported that the deal resulted from Zelensky refusing to stop attacking Russian energy targets. “Zelensky is misreading the room. By continuing to hit refineries, he is eroding the good will that he has built with Trump over the last six months,” a US official told the outlet.
European officials speaking with the Financial Times said they received calls from their American counterparts on Saturday and Sunday threatening to stop the procurement system that provides Ukraine with weapons. The threats are intended to push Ukraine into an energy truce.
The threats included suspending intelligence sharing and the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL), a NATO-coordinated mechanism through which European countries purchase American weapons for Ukraine.
Zelensky said Ukraine did not receive advance warning from its partners before a recent Russian ballistic missile attack. However, European Union and NATO officials say there is no evidence that the US has suspended intelligence sharing with Ukraine.
Trump has attempted to blame the high price of gas and diesel in the US on the war in Ukraine rather than the conflict in the Middle East.
