Saudi Airstrike Kills 13 Yemeni Civilians, Including Children

065 Procession (39025167311)

An airstrike from the U.S.-backed Saudi-led coalition hit a vehicle carrying civilians in north Yemen on Monday. The airstrike killed 13 people, including four children. The same day, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres removed the Saudi coalition from a global list of parties who have harmed children in conflicts. The international humanitarian group Save the Children said the victims were on their way home from a local market when the vehicle was suddenly bombed. The Houthi’s Health Ministry identified eleven of the victims, which included one woman and four children, ages 12-14. The...

Bernie Drops Out Amid Corona Craziness

On FPF #477, I discuss what impact Bernie Sanders dropping out of the race could have on US foreign policy. Bernie held a more non-interventionist view than Trump or Biden. However, Bernie was never willing to put the foreign policy first or challenge his opponents on their history of supporting. Bernie's exit sets up a Biden v Trump showdown in November. Both men talk a good game about avoid and ending wars, but that is not backed up by their records.

News Roundup 12/9/19

US News The charges against journalist Max Blumenthal have been dropped. He was accused of simple assault while trying to deliver food to the Venezuelan embassy in DC. No evidence was produced of the assault, and what evidence that may have existed appears to have been deleted. Five months after delivering food to the embassy, Max was arrested and held for two days at the end of October. The Real Bombshell of the Impeachment Hearings

The most shocking thing about the House impeachment hearings to this point is not a “smoking gun” witness providing irrefutable evidence of quid pro quo. It’s not that President Trump may or may not have asked the Ukrainians to look into business deals between then-Vice President Biden’s son and a Ukrainian oligarch. The most shocking thing to come out of the hearings thus far is confirmation that no matter who is elected President of the United States, the permanent government will not allow a change in our aggressive interventionist foreign policy, particularly when it comes to Russia....

Trump Flip-Flops on Syria Withdrawal. Again.

President Trump is reversing his foreign policy decisions so quickly these days that it almost seems like he overturns himself before making the decision in the first place. Last week he was very clear that the US was pulling its troops out of Syria. “Bringing soldiers home,” he said. “Let someone else fight over this long-bloodstained sand.” But then he overturned himself later in the same speech. He said: “We’ve secured the oil and therefore a small number of US troops will remain in the area where they have the oil. And we’re going to be protecting it and we’ll be deciding what we’re...

8/9/19 Hunter DeRensis on the Dangerous Foreign Policy of ‘National Conservatism’

Scott interviews Hunter DeRensis about the National Conservatism Conference, part of a movement that DeRensis describes as trying to come up with intellectual rationalizations for Trumpism after the fact. Crucially, this new national conservatism movement did not exist to support Trump as a candidate, nor did it foresee or advocate something like Trump's policies. It has instead emerged as a means to make them seem wise and acceptable by coming up with justifications that may or may not be those that Trump and his populist allies actually intended. More pressingly, the foreign policy of...

A Memorial to the Wars

On FPF #355, I talk about Memorial Day being used as propaganda for the wars. Common phrases like "they died for our freedoms" and "we are safe because of their sacrifices" are uttered by nearly everyone. The propaganda is effective in reducing criticism of US foreign policy because the legacy of the Americans who died fighting the wars is tied to the legacy of the war. I explain the best way to honor America soldiers is to not send them into meaningless wars.  Links It's legal to record cops NYT lies about Hezbollah NYT lies about Iran Report on Indian torture in...

White House Considering Reducing or Increasing Tariffs on China

President Joe Biden is examining a range of options for what to do with the current tariffs on China, according to Reuters. For months, the administration has considered cutting tariffs on Beijing to relieve inflation in the US, but has alternatively thought about additional penalties as China carries out military drills in the waters surrounding Taiwan.

The Brief Case for Pacifism – Bryan Caplan, Ph.D.
