Foreign Policy

  • The House passed its version of the 2022 NDAA totaling over $750 billion for the Pentagon. Several amendments were offered yesterday that would have restrained the president’s war-making ability. Only one, a provision that will end US support to Saudi’s War in Yemen, made it into the House bill. The Senate is expected to pass a version that includes an additional $25 billion in spending.   • The Washington Post reports from unnamed sources the head of the CIA in Vienna was removed from his post for not taking ‘Havana Syndrome’ seriously enough. [Link]
  • The leader of ‘Quad’ countries – US, India, Japan, and Australia – will meet today to discuss China. [Link]
  • Work has restarted on a facility in the Philippines to house US soldiers. [Link]

Spain

  • Catalan independence leader Carles Puidgemont was arrested in Italy. The leader of Catalonia is demanding his release. [Link]

Middle East

  • The US says the window for talks with Iran will not remain open forever. [Link]
  • Fighting broke out in southern Yemen leaving at least 35 dead. [Link]

Mozambique 

  • Rwandan forces say the insurgency they were fighting on behalf of the Mozambique government has been cleared and citizens can return home. A UN report disputed the claims from Rwanda. [Link]
