US News

  • Victims of former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar have reached a $380 million settlement with USA Gymnastics, the U.S. Olympics Committee. [Link]
  • Chicago will pay $2.9 million to Anjannette Young. In 2019, Young was handcuffed naked in front of offices as they executed a search warrant on her home, however, they had the wrong address. [Link]
  • Chicago will pay $1.2 million to the family of Pedro Rios. An autopsy shows Rios was shot in the back by police but video of the 14-year-old’s killing has not been released. [Link]
  • Vice President Kamala Harris announces the Biden administration will spend $7.5 billion to fund building electric vehicle charging stations. [Link]
  • The Biden administration leased a massive section of the Gulf of Mexico to be drilled for fossil fuels and claimed it was forced to be a court order. However, the court order did not force the White House to make the lease. [Link]

Foreign Policy

  • Fifteen members of Congress, who sit on the House or Senate Armed Services Committees, have hundreds of thousands invested in weapons makers. [Link]
  • The Navy is testing a new sailboat unmanned drone. [Link]
  • The Navy has a team of divers attempting to remove fuel from tanks that are contaminating drinking water. [Link]
  • The Space Force carried out ten-day war games. [Link]

Covid

  • The SCOTUS upholds New York’s healthcare workers vaccine mandate that does not include a religious exemption. [Link]
  • Twenty Seven soldiers from the Air Force were discharged for refusing the vaccine. [Link]

Russia

  • Ukraine says Germany is blocking a NATO weapons transfer to Ukraine. [Link]
  • A Swiss court approves the extradition of Russian businessman Ladislav Klyushin to the US. [Link]
  • Russia says it has “indirect indications” the US will deploy weapons banned by the INF Treaty to Europe. [Link]
  • Russia says Putin and Xi will discuss the US and NATO’s “aggressive” rhetoric. [Link]

China

  • China calls on the US to roll back sanctions or face consequences. [Link]
  • Australia conducts military drills with the US in the Philippines Sea. [Link]

Korea

  • South Korean President Moon Jae-in says South Korea has come to an agreement “in principle” with China and North Korea to declare an official end to the Korean War. [Link]

Afghanistan 

  • No one will face discipline for the August drone strike in Kabul that killed ten civilians. [Link]
  • Human rights experts warn international sanctions are killing Afghans. [Link]
  • The State Department says it has helped relocate 900 Americans or permanent residents from Afghanistan since the US withdrew. [Link]

Middle East

  • Turkey and Armenia will begin talks to normalize ties. [Link]
  • Israel is planning to build six new settlements in East Jerusalem. [Link]
  • Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz told the US that he is preparing the Israeli military for an attack on Iran. [Link]
  • Saudi Arabia and Iran engage in security talks in Jordan. [Link]
  • An EU official says Qatar has not done enough to improve the human rights of migrant workers. [Link]
  • The UAE threatens to pull out of the F-35 deal with the US because of the restriction the US places on the UAE to prevent Chinese espionage. [Link]
  • Turkey claims to kill 20 PKK fighters in Iraq. [Link]
  • Five million Iraqi children are orphans. [Link]
  • Four civilians were killed by the US-backed Kurdish fighters in Syria. [Link]
  • A senior commander for the Saudi-backed forces in Yemen was killed while fighting the Houthi in Maarib. Along with the commander, 27 other fighters were killed. [Link]
