The White House is discussing sending a senior official to Kiev. Potentially President Joe Biden or Vice President Kamala Harris could make the trip.

According to sources speaking with Politico, it was more likely that Secretary of State Antony Blinken or Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin would be the official to travel to Ukraine. However, Biden and Harris are being considered for the trip. The New York Times reported it was highly unlikely that the President or Vice President would be the ones to travel to Kiev.

Both outlets noted that conversations in the White House were ongoing, and no decisions have been made. For security reasons, it’s unlikely the White House will publicize the travels before the official arrives.

Politico reports the US is considering the move as a show of solidarity with Ukraine. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson recently visited Kiev and used his appearance to highlight alleged war crimes committed by Russian forces.

The visit could also risk a significant escalation with Moscow as Washington would undoubtedly send armed personnel to escort the American officials.
