Russia

  • The White House said on Tuesday that President Biden has decided not to designate Russia as a “state sponsor of terrorism” despite pressure from Congress to slap the label on Moscow. AWC
  • The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Tuesday issued a report on the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) that called for the establishment of “a nuclear safety and security protection zone” around the Russian-controlled plant. AWC
  • Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur told Business Insider that Russia’s neighbors are close to turning the Baltic Sea into a “NATO sea.” If Sweden and Finland join NATO, it would mean every nation on the Baltic Sea except for Russia would be a member of the US-led military alliance. Pevkur said this could turn the waters into an “inner sea of NATO” even though parts of the Baltic Sea are considered international waters. AWC

Middle East

  • The State Department says it will press Israel to review its policies in response to the murder of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh. Israel released a report saying one of its soldiers may have accidentally shot Akleh. The Institute
  • Ben and Jerry’s is making another attempt to prevent its parent company, Unilever from selling its assets to an Israeli firm. Unilevel is selling Ben and Jerry’s Israeli ice cream business because the Ben and Jerry’s board decided not to sell ice cream in West Bank settlements. MEE
  • Standing next to an F-35 fighter jet, Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid on Tuesday issued a threat to Iran, warning the Islamic Republic that it could soon feel Israel’s “long arm.” AWC
  • On Tuesday, Israeli airstrikes in Syria targeted the Aleppo International Airport for the second time within a week. Syrian state media reported that the strikes put the airport out of commission. AWC
