Energy Minister Svitlana Grynchuk and Justice Minister Herman Halushchenko have resigned following a corruption investigation that was made public earlier in the week. Some of the officials allegedly involved in the scheme are allies of Ukrainian President Zelensky.

On Monday, Ukrainian investigators said officials within the Energy Ministry received payments from companies that were awarded contracts from Kiev.

Responding to the corruption on Wednesday, President Zelensky said, “There must be maximum integrity in the energy sector, in absolutely all processes. I believe that the Minister of Justice and the Minister of Energy cannot remain in office. This is, among other things, a matter of trust.”

Grynchuk and Halushchenko resigned shortly after Zelensky’s statement. Zelensky’s Servant of the People Party pushed for Grynchuk and Halushchenko to become the heads of the Energy and Justice Ministries.

The investigators also alleged that Timur Mindich is at the center of the scheme. Mindich is the co-owner of Zelensky’s former TV studio that produced the “Servant of the People” TV show. Journalists have reported that Mindich has used his relationship with Zelensky to increase his wealth and power.

Mindich was reportedly able to flee Ukraine.

In July, Zelensky attempted to gain more control over anti-corruption agencies. The move led to protests, and he ultimately backed down.
