A US official said that the peace deal for Ukraine includes security guarantees for Kiev similar to the NATO mutual defence agreement. They claimed that 90% of issues between Russia and Ukraine have been resolved.
The US official held a call with reporters on Monday following two days of talks between American, European, and Ukrainian delegations. They explained that the revised proposal to end the War in Ukraine now includes Article 5-style security guarantees for Kiev.
It is unclear if Moscow will sign on to an agreement that allows Kiev to enter into a bilateral alliance with members of NATO. Russian President Vladimir Putin said Ukraine’s moves towards joining the American-led bloc were a primary reason he ordered the invasion.
On Sunday, President Zelensky said that he was willing to agree that Ukraine will not join NATO if Kyiv is allowed to sign Article 5-style pacts with the US and other European powers.
The US official went on to tell reporters that 90% of issues between Russia and Ukraine have now been resolved. “I think you’re going to hear that we have moved considerably closer in narrowing the issues between the Ukrainians and the Russians. That’s clear,” they said.
However, they admitted one of the outstanding issues was territory. Putin has demanded that Kiev cede the Donbas and recognize the territory that Russia controls in southern Ukraine. Zelensky has refused to cede any territory to Russia.
