President Donald Trump threatened to wipe out Iran if Tehran did not agree to a deal with the US that ends the war and restricts the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program. Trump has repeatedly threatened to annihilate the country of Iran, but has not followed through on the threats.
“For Iran, the Clock is Ticking, and they better get moving, FAST, or there won’t be anything left of them. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!” the President wrote on Truth Social Sunday.
Trump has frequently used Truth Social to threaten to destroy the society of Iran to push Tehran to accept his demands to end the war. However, Tehran has not moved off its positions for ending the conflict, and Trump has not followed through on his threats.
The US is demanding that Iran agree to export its stockpile of enriched uranium, only operate one nuclear facility, give up control of the Strait of Hormuz, and cut ties with its allies in the region. Notably, this is a walk back from Washington’s maximalist demands at the start of the war that included regime change and restrictions on Iran’s missile program.
Iran is demanding that the US and Israel pay war reparations, release frozen Iranian assets, and recognize Tehran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz, a comprehensive peace deal that includes ending the Israeli occupation of Lebanon, and an agreement from the US and Israel not to attack Iran again.
On February 28, Israel and the US launched a surprise attack on Iran. After five weeks of intense fighting, the US and Iran agreed to a truce. The ceasefire has held for over a month, but there have been frequent violations. On Sunday, the UAE reported that a drone caused a fire on the grounds of a nuclear power plant.
