US News

  • Former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger gets ten years for murdering an unarmed man. Guyger entered the wrong apartment and then shot the unarmed man she claimed she believed was breaking into her apartment. [Link]
  • Customs and Border Patrol is spending $1.2 million on anti-drone systems for the southern border. [Link]
  • The US is withholding about $19 million from a UN agency because the agency does not have enough protections for whistleblowers. [Link]

Ukraine

  • Ukraine’s president says a breakthrough was made and expects a summit to be held within a month on ending the civil war. [Link]

North Korea

  • North Korea claims it successfully launched a ballistic missile from a submarine. [Link]

Afghanistan

  • US and Taliban officials traveled to Pakistan to discuss reviving peace talks. It is unclear if US officials would meet with Taliban officials. [Link]

Middle East

  • Iran’s President says he broadly accepts the terms of a deal proposed by European countries to get Iran to reenter the JCPOA. Iran’s president expressed skepticism that the US would be open to any new agreement as Trump is calling for increased sanctions. [Link] 
  • The Iranian Supreme Leader says Iran will continue to reduce its commitments to the JCPOA. [Link]
  • Seven people have been killed in two days of protests in Iraq. [Link] Last night, 11 more people were killed during protests. [Link]

Africa

  • The UN reports that 1,000 migrants have died attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea this year. 2019 is the sixth straight year of over 1,000 people dying attempting to flee Africa from Europe. At least 15,000 have died since 2014. [Link]
  • Suspected jihadists have killed at least 25 soldiers in Mali. [Link]
