US News

  • The CIA designed technology that would allow for the US to limit shoulder-fired missiles use to a specific time and place. [Link]
  • The UN Special Rapprator for Torture calls for the immediate release of Julian Assange because of due process violations and psychological torture. [Link]

Afghanistan

  • The Taliban leadership agrees to a ceasefire around the signing of a peace deal with the US. It is unclear how long the ceasefire will last or when it will start. [Link] Other Taliban sources say a ceasefire has not been made. [Link]
  • USA Today reports on a 2008 military raid in Afghanistan that killed scores of civilians. The report explains how a local informant dupped US soldiers. In total, more than 30 children were killed. [Link] 

Iraq

  • Protesters attacked the US Embassy in Iraq in response to US airstrikes against Iraqi militias. [Link]
  • Iraq’s prime minister said the US attack on Katalib Hezballah was a vicious attack on Iraqi forces. [Link]
  • Iraqi cleric Sadr says he is willing to work with his political rivals to get American forces out of Iraq. [Link] Other influential Iraqis are condemning the US strikes. [Link]

Middle East

  • Turkey arrests 94 people accused of being IS members. [Link]
  • Netanyahu wins the Lukid party primary and will be the party’s prime minister’s candidate in the upcoming election. [Link]
  • Saudi Arabia signs a deal with Raytheon to have Saudi maintain the Patriot missile defense systems deployed to Saudi Arabia. [Link]

Somalia

  • Al-Shabaab claims responsibility for the bombing in Mogadishu that killed over 90. [Link]
  • The US claims to kill four al-Shabaab militants in three airstrikes. [Link]
  • The US carried out a record of 63 airstrikes in Somalia in 2019. [Link]

Africa

  • Two unnamed Turkish officials say Syrian militia fighters have not yet been moved into Libya to fight alongside the Turkish backed Lybian government. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reports 300 Syrian rebels have been moved to Turkey. [Link]
  • The ADF militia killed Eighteen civilians in the Congo. [Link]
  • A Sudanese court sentenced 27 people to death over the murder of a teacher during the protests that led to the overthrow of the long-standing dictator of Sudan. [Link]
