US News

  • The results from the Democrats Iowa Caucus have been delayed. The party says technical problems with a new app are behind the delay. [Link]
  • Sen Sanders is leading all 2020 candidates – including Trump – in campaign donations from soldiers. [Link]
  • Zerohedge was removed from Twitter after Buzzfeed complained about an article Zerohedge posted naming a Chinese scientist that the article alleged was behind the virus outbreak. [Link]
  • The number of sexual assaults reported at military academies increased by 33% in 2019. [Link]
  • At least 137 airmen and Air Force civilian employees committed suicide in 2019. The number of suicides increased by 33% from 2018. [Link]

Colombia

  • Nearly 200 former members of the Colombian militant group FARC have been murdered since disarming in a peace agreement. The murders are causing current members of FARC to be unwilling to follow the peace agreement. [Link]

Ukraine

  • Ukraine leaked audio from the night Iran shot down the Ukrainian plane. The audio is of an Iranian pilot from a different plane, saying the Ukrainian plane had been hit with a missile. Iran is upset the audio was leaked and said it would cease sharing evidence with Ukraine. [Link]
  • Ukraine’s President said Iran offered Ukraine $80,000 per family in compensation for the Ukrainian plane Iran shot down, but he was turning down the offer for being too low. [Link]

Myanmar

  • The Myanmar Army killed two Rohingya women when shelling a village. One of the women was pregnant, and seven others were injured. [Link]

Afghanistan 

  • The Taliban carried out more attacks in the last three months of 2019 than they had in the last three months of any year. The data on Taliban attacks started to be collected in 2010. [Link]
  • In the last three months of 2019, the Afghan Army suffered an insider attack on average every four days. Eighty-two insider attacks happened in 2019. The attacks killed over 170 people. [Link]

Middle East

  • The Palestinian Authority restores ties with Israel a day after cutting them. [Link]
  • Turkey says six of its personnel deployed to Syria’s Idlib Province were killed by Syrian government forces. [Link] Turkey said it killed 76 Syrian soldiers in response. [Link] Russia said the Turkish forces were killed because Turkey did not inform Russia of their operation. [Link]
  • The Russian and Turkish foreign ministers announce a new deal to reduce clashes between Syrian and Turkish forces in Idlib. [Link]
  • The Houthi say they have carried out attacks inside Saudi Arabia in response to Saudi airstrikes in Yemen. [Link]
  • A diplomatic source said a breakthrough was made in negotiations between warring parties in Yemen to allow people in critical needs of medical care to fly out of a Yemeni airport. Saudi Arabia controls Yemeni airspace and has not allowed flights in and out of Yemen. [Link]
