US News

  • Trump names Congressman Mark Meadows as his chief of staff. Mick Mulvaney is out as acting chief of staff. [Link]
  • The DNC changed its debate rules to prevent Tulsi from joining Bernie and Biden on the debate stage. [Link]
  • The Pentagon informs Congress it plans to send Ukraine an additional $125 million in military aid. The aid includes radars and patrol boats. [Link]

Afghanistan

  • ISIS claims responsibility for a recent attack in Kabul on the rally of self-proclaimed president Abdullah Abdullah. At least 32 people were killed in the attack. [Link]
  • On Sunday, gunmen assassinated a politician and killed two of his bodyguards in Kabul. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. [Link]
  • The International Criminal Court will allow an inquiry into possible US war crimes in Afghanistan to move forward. [Link]

Saudi Arabia

  • Saudi Arabia arrests two senior members of the royal family alleging they were engaging in a coup attempt. The detained are former crown prince Mohammed bin Nayef and the King’s younger brother Ahmed bin Abdulaziz. [Link]
  • Saudi Arabia shakes up the oil market with a big cut to the price of oil. [Link]

Syria

  • The US blocks a UN statement backing the ceasefire in Idlib Syria. [Link]
  • The Idlib ceasefire is generally holding. [Link]
  • The UN calls for an immediate freeze of military operations in Yemen. [Link]

Africa

  • The US creates a special envoy post for the Sahel region of Africa. Peter Pham was named to the post. The envoy’s stated purpose is to reduce violence in the region. [Link]
  • Somali media reports a senior al-Shabaab member was killed by a US airstrike near the end of February. [Link]
  • Two militants blew themselves up outside of the US embassy in Tunisia. A policeman was killed in the blast. [Link]
  • Sudan’s Prime Minister survived an assassination attempt. [Link]
