US News

  • A Pennsylvania man who is believed to be innocent and wrongly sentenced to death now has coronavirus. The murder victim’s mother is pushing to get the man released from jail. [Link]
  • A church in Kentucky defied the governor’s dictates that all churches must remain closed. Protesters threw nails in the parking lot. Police officers came to the church, recorded license plates, and said all people who attended the service must quarantine for 14 days. [Link]
  • An inmate of Cook County Illions prisons dies of Covid-19 chained to his bed. The family of the man is now suing. 276 prisoners in Cook County prisons have tested positive for Covid-19. [Link]
  • The US government has added $1 trillion to the national debt in six months. Over $2 trillion has been added since Trump took office. [Link]
  • Congress is hearing testimony on using Americans’ private cell phone information to fight the coronavirus. Privacy experts warn any new surveillance powers are unlikely to be fully rolled back. [Link]
  • The US threatens to place “visa sanctions” on countries that do not accept deportees from the US. [Link]

Assange

  • Julian Assange’s partner and children release a video. The video comes as the judge in Assange’s extradition case announced she planned to reveal their identities. [Link]
  • Assange was arrested in the Ecuadorian embassy one year ago. Assange is now in the middle of an extradition hearing that, if he is extradited, would be a massive blow to press freedom. [Link]

Kosovo

  • A member of the NATO mission to Kosovo tests positive for coronavirus. [Link]

China

  • The US sails a destroyer through the Taiwan Strait. China was conducting military air drills in the same area. [Link]
  • The US gave a $3.7 million grant to the Chinese research lab in Wuhan. [Link]

Pakistan

  • Fighting between Pakistani and Indian forces along the Line of Control killed three Indian and wounded two Pakistani civilians. [Link]

Afghanistan

  • The Taliban plan to begin releasing Afghan government prisoners. The Afghan government has so far released 300 Taliban prisoners. [Link]
  • The Commander of US Forces in Afghanistan meets with a Taliban delegation to discuss reducing violence. [Link]
