Police

  • Rayshard Brooks was killed by police in Georgia. Police were called because Brooks was passed out in his car. Brooks fought with police before he was killed. The Atlanta police chief quit, and the officer who murdered Brooks was fired. The Wendy’s, where Brooks was killed, was burned down. [Link]
  • Police searched an 11-year old boy’s room because someone saw a BB gun on his wall during online-learning. The school said it was equivalent to bringing a gun to school. [Link]
  • Trump, Obama, Bush, and Clinton failed to enforce a law that requires federal tracking of police killings. [Link]
  • Over 1,400 people associated with pro-sports sign a letter pushing for the end of qualified immunity. [Link]
  • Mike Maharrey explains how qualified immunity makes it extremely difficult to have police officers face justice for violent acts committed on the job. [Link]

Foreign Policy 

  • The Air Force plans to keep six F-35s that were intended to be sold to Turkey. The US is no longer willing to send the planes to Turkey because Turkey bought the S-400 air defense system from Russia. The F-35s will likely need upgrades. [Link]
  • The US Ambassador to Germany says Trump is looking to remove some troops from Japan and South Korea. [Link]
  • Russia sentences US citizen Dan Whelan to 16 years in jail for spying. Whelan says he was set up. [Link]
  • According to a US official, the Trump administration plans to reinterpret a Cold War-era arms control treaty to sell armed drones to countries like Jordan and the UAE. [Link]
  • Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is planning to meet China’s top diplomat in Hawaii. [Link]
  • The US and Poland say negotiations to build Fort Trump and deploy US troops to the NATO ally are underway. [Link]

North Korea

  • North Korea is threatening to retaliate against South Korea because North Korean defectors in South Korea are sending back information and rice to North Korea. Tensions between North and South Korea are high as North Korea believes South Korea lied about how willing Trump was to make a deal. [Link]

Middle East

  • Turkey announces the start of a new anti-terror campaign in Iraq. Turkey hit several Iraqi targets with airstrikes. [Link]
  • An Iranian news agency says the country was prepared to target US commercial ships in the Persian Gulf if the US interfered with the Iranian ships bringing fuel to Venezuela. [Link]
  • In Damascus, Israeli missiles killed at least seven people. [Link]
  • In Yemen, the Southern Transitional Council – a group looking to create their own state – seized 67 billion riyals ($20 million) that Saudi Arabia was attempting to transfer to Yemen’s central bank. [Link]
  • Doctors Without Borders reports that cases of Covid-19 in Yemen are high, and people are dying alarmingly fast. [Link]
