US News

  • Iowa’s governor will sign an executive order allowing felons to vote. [Link]
  • Trump signs a new executive order attempting to give minor reform to police abuse. The EO calls for police departments to share more information about police officers with a history of abuse and incentives police to include social workers on calls involving nonviolent offenses. [Link]
  • The NYPD is reassigning 600 plain-clothing police officers. The decision was made because of the ongoing protests against police brutality. [Link]
  • The US Embassy in Ukraine reports the US transferred $60 million in military aid, including Javelin anti-tank missiles. [Link]
  • The US wants an in-person meeting with Iran to discuss a larger prisoner swap. [Link]

India/China

  • Dozens of Indian and Chinese soldiers were killed along the line of control. India says 20 of its soldiers died. More details of the conflict are unclear. [Link]

North Korea

  • North Korea destroyed an office in a border town. The office was set up for talks with South Korea. [Link]
  • North Korea rejected an offer from South Korea to have special envoys meet amid increasing tensions. North Korea also said it would redeploy forces to some border areas. [Link]

Israel 

  • A senior UAE official says his country can work with Israel despite political differences. [Link]
  • Netanyahu signals he wants at least a two-phase annexation of the West Bank. The first phase would just annex small settlements. [Link]

Libya

  • Russia and Turkey postpone planned talks that were directed towards reducing violence in Libya and Syria. [Link]
  • After the talks were delayed, the Turkish-backed Government of National Accord began an offensive to retake Sirte. [Link]
  • Turkey is in talks with the Government of National Accord to establish a lasting Turkish presence at Libyan military bases. [Link]
  • Russia asks the US to help create a ceasefire in Libya. [Link]

Africa 

  • At least 61 people died when a migrant ship sank off the coast of Tunisia. [Link]
  • France and five African Sahel countries announce a coalition to combat jihadists in the region. France is hoping for support from European allies and financial support from Saudi Arabia and the UAE. [Link]
  • Unknown militants killed ten Ivory Coast soldiers near Burkina Faso. [Link]
  • Islamists in Nigeria killed 20 soldiers and more than 40 civilians. [Link]
  • Two UN peacekeepers were killed in Mali. [Link]
  • Islamists killed Twenty-four Malian soldiers in an ambush. [Link]
