US News

  • Boston bans the use of facial recognition. [Link]
  • Eight of the Minneapolis police officers to be fired since 2006, six have gotten their jobs reinstated after intervention from the police union. [Link]
  • Senator Rand Paul is leading an effort to restrict police ability to steal through civil asset forfeiture. [Link]
  • The US will continue to deploy at least 4,000 Army soldiers to the southern border. So far, the deployment has cost $745 million. [Link]

Mexico 

  • The Mexico City police chief was shot, and two of his bodyguards killed in an assassination attempt by drug cartels. [Link]

US/Russia

  • Secretary of Defense Mark Esper will meet with Trump today to discuss options about removing troops from Germany. Trump announced weeks ago that he would withdraw 9,500 troops from Germany and cap the deployment at 25,000. [Link]
  • Russian and American planes continue to intercept each other over international airspace. [Link]
  • The NYT reported that an unnamed intelligence official said that Russia offered bounties to the Taliban to kill American soldiers. CNN later reported an unnamed European intelligence official had confirmed the reports. However, no outlet has provided any proof the bounties were offered, or any US soldiers were attacked as a result of the bounty. Joe Biden attacked Trump for failing to respond to the alleged bounty. Afghanistan

  • Trump finalized a plan to withdraw another 4,000 troops from Afghanistan. Trump’s goal is to have around 4,500 soldiers in Afghanistan by Fall. [Link]
  • An Afgan government airstrike killed 15 Taliban. The government claims members of Taliban leadership were killed. [Link]
  • Two members of Afghanistan’s human rights commission were killed in a bombing. [Link]

Israel

  • David Cornin explains how European Union research funding promotes Israeli apartheid. [Link]
  • Israeli airstrikes continue to target Syrian and allied forces in Syria. [Link]
