US News

  • The DNC defeated a proposed change to its platform that would have called for the legalization of marijuana. [Link]
  • Twitter suspended Donald Trump Jr. for posting a video of doctors talking about Covid. [Link]
  • Charlotte police suspected a wanted man was hiding in a family home. The family gave the officers the keys to the home to search for the man. The police instead deployed a SWAT team to the home. SWA destroyed the home with flashbangs, tear gas, and other less-lethal arms. After gassing the home, the police entered it to discover the wanted man was not there. [Link]
  • Miami police have fined over 150 people for not wearing masks or wearing masks incorrectly. People say police have issued $100 tickets for moving the mask to take a drink of water. Police are conducting 500 random mask checks a day [Link]
  • The Senate included $1.75 billion for a new FBI building in its bailout bill. The bill has passed the Senate. [Link]

Foreign Policy

  • The Senate version of the second Covid bailout includes $30 billion in funding for the Pentagon. [Link]
  • The US announces sanctions on two former Venezuelan officials. [Link]
  • The US and Russia are meeting in Vienna for arms control talks. [Link]
  • An additional 10,000 children have died a month in 2020 due to hunger because of the lockdowns. [Link]

Afghanistan

  • The Taliban announces a three-day ceasefire starting Friday. [Link]

Yemen

  • The Yemeni Southern Transitional Council announces they are abandoning their demand for a separate state and will try to reach a power-sharing deal with the Saudis. [Link]

Somalia

  • The US admits an airstrike in Somalia on February 2nd killed a civilian. [Link]
