  • Trump supporters pushed past police and entered the capitol building as Congress was in the process of affirming the electoral college vote. The process was temporarily halted. One supporter was shot in the back of the neck by police officers and killed. 
  • Ashli Babbit – a 14 year Air Force vet and who served four tours – was identified as the woman police murdered. [Link]
  • Twitter banned Trump’s account for 12 hours and is forcing him to remove three tweets. Before the ban, Trump tweeted that the election was stolen but his supporters should peacefully go home. [Link] Facebook blocked Trump from posting for 24 hours. [Link]
  • House Democrats call on Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Trump from office. [Link]

US News

  • The Kenosha County District Attorney announces the officer who shot James Blake will not face charges. [Link]
  • Massachusetts will ban the sale of new non-electric cars starting in 2035. [Link]
  • New York threatens to fine hospitals $100,000 for failing to use all its covid vaccinations. [Link]

Venezuela

  • The EU no longer recognizes Juan Guaido as Venezuela’s president. [Link]

China

  • A New US Navy report calls for the Navy and Marines to confront Russia and China in the arctic. [Link]
  • The US is threatening to blacklist Alibaba and Tencent claiming the companies are controlled by the Chinese military. [Link]
  • Secretary of State Pompeo says the US is looking to sanction several people in Hong Kong who were involved in arresting activists. [Link]
  • Pompeo says the US Ambassador to the UN, Kelly Craft, will visit Taiwan. [Link]

Korea

  • A US spy plane flies near the DMZ as North Korea began its ruling party’s congress. [Link]
  • South Korea deploys a warship to the Persian Gulf after Iran seized a South Korean ship. [Link]

  • Israel convicts a Palestinian activist of protesting without a permit and interfering with Israeli soldiers’ duties. [Link]
