US News

  • Two people were charged with assaulting Capitol police officer Brian Sicknick. Sicknick died after the Capitol Riot. It is unclear of the assault – spraying an irritant at Sicknick – caused his death. [Link]
  • The US increased its share of global weapon sales from 32% to 37%. [Link]

Korea

  • Secretary of State Blinken says the US will continue to demand the denuclearization of North Korea. [Link]
  • North Korea says the US can “avoid a stink” if it doesn’t carryout annual war games with South Korea. [Link]

Afghanistan 

  • An attack on a university bus in Afghanistan killed two. The attack was blamed on the Taliban, who denied involvement. [Link]
  • CENTCOM Chief Gen. McKenize says withdrawing forces from Afghanistan on May 1st will lead to more violence. [Link]

Middle East

  • Iran’s Foreign Minister warned that the US should reenter the JCPOA soon. Iran has upcoming elections, and after the election, the FM believes that it will be several months before Iran is able to negotiate with the US. [Link]
  • Turkey’s President Erdogan calls for the West to unite behind Turkey in Syria. [Link]
  • The US signed a letter with other Western countries condemning Egypt’s human rights violations. [Link]

Africa 

  • Secretary of State Blinken held a call with the UN head about holding an international investigation in Ethiopia. [Link]
  • The US will continue to pause most of its assistance to Ethiopia. [Link]
  • The Ethiopian government rejected the accusations by the US that it was ethnically cleansing Tigray. [Link]
  • Armed men attack a school in Nigeria. Thirty-nine people are still missing from a previous attack on a school. [Link]
  • Militants have killed 30 Nigerian soldiers in recent clashes. [Link]
  • Armed Islamist militants killed 12 people in a raid on a village. [Link]
