Great Power

  • The US is calling on Russia to explain why it moved troops inside of Russia’s borders. [Link]
  • Ukraine’s President says the only way to end the country’s civil war is by moving towards NATO membership. [Link]
  • Western powers are looking to deploy short and medium-range missiles within striking distance of Russian air defense systems. Russia says it will take countermeasures if the missiles are deployed. [Link]
  • The US moves an aircraft carrier into the South China Sea as China and the Philippines argue over a disputed reef. [Link]

Afghanistan

  • Peace talks in Afghanistan will consider 25 different proposals from various groups. [Link]
  • At least 48 people were killed during fighting in southern Afghanistan over the weekend. [Link]

Middle East

  • Israeli forces murder a Palestinian man who was driving towards a checkpoint. The soldiers claim they feared for their lives. The man’s wife – who was in the car when the soldiers killed her husband – says he was not trying to harm anyone. [Link]
  • Russia, China, the UK, France, and Germany are holding indirect talks between the US and Iran. [Link]
  • Turkey arrested ten admirals for signing a letter in support of the Montreux Convention. The convention limits the ships that can enter the Black Sea through the existing straits. Turkey is planning to build a canal and it claims the canal will not be subject to the agreement. [Link]
  • Two months ago, Biden said he would be ending US support for offensive Saudi operations in Yemen. However, two months later Saudi is continuing to wage the war and the US is still supporting the blockade. [Link]

Africa

  • Al-Shabaab carried out attacks on two Somali Army bases. Shortly after the attacks, ten people were killed by a suicide bomber in Mogadishu. [Link]
  • Ethiopia says Eritrean forces have started to withdraw from Tigray. [Link]
  • The State Department is looking into alleged atrocities that occurred in Tigray. [Link]
  • Militants killed four UN Peacekeepers in northern Mali. About 20 of the attackers were also killed. [Link]
  • At least four members of the Burkina Faso security forces were killed in an ambush. [Link]
  • Gunmen attacked a prison in Nigeria, freeing over 1,800 people. [Link]
  • At least 40 people were killed in ethnic clashes in Sudan. Clashes between these groups killed over 100 earlier this year. [Link]
