US News

  • Video shows a California police officer shotting a 16-year-old in the back of the head as he ran away from the police officer. [Link]
  • Secretary of Defense Mark Esper recuses himself from the review of the Pentagon’s JEDI contract. Esper’s son works at IMB, who bid on the contract. [Link]
  • A DC court released an arrest warrant for the son of El Chapo. The warrant prompted Mexican law enforcement to attempt to arrest him. Mexican authorities briefly had El Chapo’s son in custody but had to release him because the police were outgunned by the cartel. [Link]
  • About 11% of the Pentagon’s budget is classified spending. The amount of the Pentagon budget that is classified is increasing. [Link]
  • The Senate votes to extend NATO membership to North Macedonia. Only Senators Paul and Lee voted against N. Macedonia joining NATO. [Link]

Canada

  • Canada’s president Trudeau wins reelection. [Link]

Chile

  • Protests continue in Chile over public transportation. So far, at least 15 people have been killed and 2,600 arrested. [Link]

Syria 

  • A Syrian Kurd living as a refugee in Germany set himself on fire outside of the UN refugee agency. [Link]
  • The US State Department has been pushing for the Syrian Kurds to work with jihadi aligned Arab rebels for at least the past month. The Syria Kurds have refused. Now the State Department is looking for opportunities to align with these groups. [Link]
  • The US envoy to Syria James Jeffery says dozens of IS fighters have escaped since Turkey began its invasion of Syria. [Link] The Syria envoy also said the US forces saw Turkish forces committing war crimes in Syria. [Link]
  • The US says all YPG fighters have moved from the safe zone. [Link]
  • Russia and Turkey agreed to a ceasefire agreement similar to the deal reached with the US. All armed Kurdish forces are required to move 30 km south of the border. Russian and Syrian troops will move into the area. In six days, Russian and Turkish forces will begin joint paroles 10 km south of the border. [Link]
  • Russia says if armed Syrian Kurds do not withdraw from the 30 km zone along the Syria border, then Russia forces will withdraw from the area allowing Turkey to move in. [Link]
  • Trump said the ceasefire in Syria is now permanent, and he has lifted sanctions against Turkey. [Link]
  • Russia deployed an addition 276 military police and some military hardware to Syria. [Link]

Iraq

  • Def Sec Esper says the US will eventually bring the troops redeployed to Iraq back to the US. [Link]
  • The Iraqi government says US forces leaving Syria have no permission to stay in Iraq. [Link]
  • Six Iraqi security forces were killed by an IS attack in northern Iraq. [Link]
  • A report finds that 157 people were killed during Iraqi protests. Eight of the dead were members of the Iraqi security forces. The report found evidence of security forces targeted protesters with sniper fire. [Link] The UN mission to Iraq finds the security forces committed serious human rights violations in suppressing and killing protesters. [Link]
