Great Power

  • Russia says it intercepted a US spy plane over the Black Sea. [Link]
  • The US will sanction a Chinese chipmaker and oil company. [Link]
  • A NATO report by ‘wise persons’ say the alliance needs to prepare for a confrontation with China. [Link]
  • NATO is asking member states for extra money to give NATO personnel a 2.2% raise. Many member states are upset by the request for additional funding. [Link]

Afghanistan

  • At least 30 Afghan government soldiers were killed by a car bomb. [Link]
  • The US has closed at least ten bases in Afghanistan since signing the peace deal with the Taliban. [Link]
  • The Afghan government claims to kill 70 Taliban over 24 hours. The Taliban said they killed 40 Afghan soldiers in that time. [Link]

Iran

  • The US deploys the aircraft carrier, USS Nimitz, to the Persian Gulf. [Link]
  • A top Iranian nuclear scientist was assassinated in Tehran. Israel is believed to be behind the assassination. [Link]
  • Iranian officials say the country will not fall into a trap in responding to the assassination of its nuclear scientist. [Link]
  • An anonymous Israel official told the NYTs that the world should thank Israel for the assassination. [Link]
