US News

Russia

  • The commander that oversees US nuclear forces delivered an ominous warning at a naval conference last week by calling the war in Ukraine a “warmup” for the “big one” that is to come. AWC
  • Finnish President Sauli Niinisto on Monday said that Finland has no plans to host nuclear weapons if it joins NATO, although other Finnish officials have said they won’t rule out the idea. AWC
  • Ukraine on Monday announced that it used wartime authorities to seize ownership of “strategic companies” as the government of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky continues to consolidate power under martial law. AWC
  • The Washington Post reported on Saturday that the US is privately encouraging Ukraine to signal an openness to negotiations with Russia but for public relations purposes, not to actually pursue diplomacy. AWC
  • National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan has in recent months held secret talks with high-level Russian officials, The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday, citing unnamed US and allied officials. AWC
  • The Kremlin on Monday said it had “nothing to say” about a report from The Wall Street Journal that said US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan held secret talks with senior Russian officials in recent months. AWC

Korea

  • Two US supersonic B-1B bombers flew over South Korea on Saturday, marking the first time the bombers were deployed to the region since 2017 as tensions continue to rise on the Korean peninsula. AWC

  • US Central Command launched warplanes based in the Persian Gulf toward Iran after Saudi Arabia claimed Tehran was planning an imminent attack on the kingdom, The Washington Post reported on Saturday. AWC

  • US Africa Command said Saturday that it conducted an airstrike against al-Shabaab in Somalia on November 3 as US operations in the country continue to escalate. AWC
