US News

  • Trump places visa bans on people from Nigeria, Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan, and Myanmar. People from Tanzania and Sudan are no longer eligible for diversity visas. [Link]
  • Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Ukraine and told the country it will have support from the US. [Link]
  • Pompeo traveled to Kazakhstan and pushed the country to take a more aggressive stance against China’s alleged abuse of the Uighur Muslim minority. [Link]
  • Indonesia has deported an American journalist who had been jailed for 45 days. [Link]

Venezuela

  • Venezuela attempted to restore diplomatic connections with Colombia, but Colombia rejected the plan. [Link]
  • The US sailed the USS Detroit through Venezuelan claimed waters on a freedom of navigation and surveillance mission. [Link]

UK

  • Late Friday, the UK officially left the EU. [Link]
  • A man in London stabbed several people with a knife. Before he being shot and killed by police. The UK government is saying the man was a terrorist. [Link]

Israel 

  • The Palestinian Authority says it will cut all ties – including security ties – with the US and Israel in response to Trump’s Deal of the Century. The Palestinians are saying they will withdraw from the Oslo Accords, and this is the first step. [Link]
  • The Arab League rejects Trump’s Deal of the Century. [Link]

Iraq

  • Mohammad Tawfiq Allawi was elected as Prime Minister of Iraq. [Link]
  • Protests in Iraq continue after the new PM was announced. [Link]
  • The former leader of al-Qaeda in Fallujah was arrested in Arizona on an extradition request from the Iraqi government.  The Iraqi government claims Ali Yousif Ahmed al- Nouri killed two Iraqi police officers in 2006. [Link]

Syria

  • Turkey’s President Erdogan says his country could launch an offensive into Syria if Syria counties its offensive against Syrian rebels in Idlib. [Link]
  • The former spokesman for the Syria rebel group Jaish al-Islam has been arrested for war crimes in France. [Link]
