US News

  • Peter Van Buren: Mueller Time is Finally Over
  • The 4th Appeals Court denied Chelsea Manning bail. [Link]
  • Tulsi Gabbard discusses her efforts to legalize marijuana. [Link]
  • The Navy covered up the reason for the Cold War-era explosion on the USS Iowa that killed dozens of sailors. The Navy apologized to a sailor blamed for causing the explosion. [Link]
  • 1,700 Marines deployed to Australia for training. [Link]  

Sri Lanka

  • The Sri Lankan Easter bombing hit six different sites – three churches and three hotels – in coordinated attacks. There were seven suicide bombers. At least three police officers died in explosions arresting people alleged to be involved in the bombing. The Sri Lankan government has imposed a curfew and censored social media in response to the attack. [Link]
  • A Muslim militia, National Thowfeek Jamaath, was accused of carrying out the Easter Bombings. [Link]

Indonesia

  • Joko Widodo wins reelection as Indonesia’s president. [Link]

Iran

  • Josh Rogan says two unnamed State Department officials say Pompeo will announce Monday that no waivers for Iranian oil sanctions will be extended past May 2.  [Link] Secretary of State Mike Pompeo made the announcement. [Link]
  • Trump tweets Saudi Arabia will increase oil production to make up for market deficits caused by increased sanctions on Iran. [Link]
  • Facebook and Instagram have stated to ban members of the IRGC because the US named the IRGC a terror group. [Link]

Syria

  • Infighting between pro-Assad forces – Shi’ite militias and Russian – kills 11 in Aleppo. [Link]
  • Syrian Kurds are holding over 2,000 foreign ISIS fighters. There are about 9,000 captured ISIS fighters. A small number of captured fighters claim to be Americans. [Link]
  • ISIS attacks in 48 hours have killed 60 Syrian soldiers. [Link]

Yemen

  • ACLED reports 10,000 Yemenis died from conflict in the last five months. [Link]
  • Eighty-five people have been killed in fighting between the Houthi and Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces in southern Yemen. [Link]
  • Trump’s veto of the Yemen War Powers bill allows the barbaric war against the Yemen people to continue. [Link]
  • Col Andrew Bacevich explains Trump’s veto of the Yemen War Powers bill is unconstitutional. [Link]
