Spain

  • John McAfee was found dead in a Spanish prison. The US was attempting to extradite him on tax charges. [Link]
  • Spain pardoned nine Catalan leaders who were imprisoned for supporting an independence movement. [Link]

Afghanistan

  • The White House says there has not been an increase in attacks directed at US forces in Afghanistan. [Link]
  • The WSJ talked with unnamed officials who warned Afghanistan could collapse within six to 12 months of a US withdrawal. [Link]
  • Turkey will not deploy more troops to Afghanistan to secure the Kabul Airport. Turkey currently has about 500 troops in Afghanistan. [Link]

Israel

  • Israel is now requiring Palestinian farmers to remove the crown from tomatoes before exporting them. Palestinian farmers say this will take too much time and cause the tomato to expire faster. [Link]

Iran

  • An Iranian official said the US agreed to lift some Trump-era sanctions on Iran. The US then released a statement saying it didn’t agree to lift sanctions. [Link]
  • The Justice Department announced it seized 33 website domain names belonging to Iran or groups with ties to Iran. The statement claimed the domains were in violation of US sanctions. [Link]
  • The Iranian agreement to allow the IAEA to continue to monitor its nuclear sites will end this week. Iran is expected to refuse to extend the agreement until the US returns to the Iran Nuclear Deal. [Link] 

Africa

  • 15 police in Burkina Faso were killed by militants. [Link]
  • Children soldiers between the ages of 12 and 14 carried out an attack on a Burkina Faso village that killed 130. [Link]
  • A new UN report estimates that 350,000 people have been killed by the decade-long insurgency in Nigeria. [Link]
