US News

  • The White House is considering a plan that will allow American adults take a second covid booster. Market Watch
  • President Biden penned an op-ed about his upcoming trip to the Middle East that was published in The Washington Post on Saturday, where he falsely claimed that US troops are not engaged in combat missions in the region. AWC
  • A F-18 Super Hornet blew off the deck of a US aircraft carrier. Navy Times

Russia

  • The United Nations says Kiev’s and Moscow’s soldiers used elderly and disabled civilians as human shields. In one situation, Ukrainian soldiers hid in a nursing home, provoking an attack that killed dozens of residents. AWC
  • Secretary of State Antony Blinken used his platform at the Group of Twenty (G20) summit to accuse Russia of having no interest in negotiations. Russia Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Moscow believes Washington is at fault for the frozen relationship. AWC
  • The Biden administration announced Friday a new $400 million weapons package for Ukraine that includes more High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), 150mm artillery ammunition, and tactical vehicles. AWC 
  • The first group of a few hundred Ukrainian soldiers, many of whom have no previous military experience, have arrived in the UK for combat training. The UK has pledged to train 10,000 Ukrainian recruits. VOA
  • Ukraine hopes to assemble a “million-strong” army to try to retake territory occupied by Russia. Guardian
  • Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen will seek to gain support for a plan to attempt a price cap on Russian oil as the US is looking to hurt Russia’s profits while keeping gas prices down. AWC
  • On Friday, Moscow warned Lithuania and the EU that it could take “harsh measures” if the embargo imposed on Kaliningrad was not lifted. AWC

Korea

  • North Korea carried out artillery drills. The military exercises shortly after US F-35s arrived in South Korea. AP

China

  • Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he expects President Joe Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping will have the opportunity to speak in the weeks ahead. Reuters

Middle East

  • Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid called for peace with Saudi Arabia and normalized ties with Arab nations. UPI 
  • The IAEA announced on Sunday that Iran has begun the extraction of 20% enriched uranium from one of its newest centrifuge chains. The plans were already reported, and this is just them following through on the announcement. AWC
